“Paktong. The Non-Tarnishable 'Silver' Alloy Used for 'Adam' Firegrates
and Early Georgian Candlesticks”
By W.D. John & Catherine Coombes. Published in Newport Mon by The
Ceramic Book Company in 1970. Limited to 500 copies.
Paktong, an alloy of copper, zinc and nickel which imitates silver but
is harder and does not tarnish, was developed in China and used for
coinage for several centuries before it finally began to be smuggled to
England in the late 18th century. The small amount available was used
for fire-grates, andirons and candlesticks by leading manufacturers who
could afford to pay for it. This was the first major study of
English-made Paktong antiques.
Hardcover. 10"x12", 25 pages plus 1 color and 50 black & white plates.
Full light-blue leather with gilt titles. Covers with some uneven
fading, some cover scuffs and light wear. $40
