ROCKEFELLER, John D. RANDOM REMINISCENCES OF MEN AND EVENTS. New York:
Doubleday, Page & Company, 1909. First Edition. Gilt-lettered and
decorated blue cloth, illustrated with a frontispiece photograph. SIGNED
by Rockefeller on the half-title page and dated 2 September 1913. A
5-3/4" x 3-1/2" photograph of Rockefeller playing golf with four other
men is pasted to the page facing the page with the autograph. An ink
caption in an unknown hand identifies the photo as having been taken at
Forest Hill with the same date as Rockefeller's signature and names the
golfers: Capt. Scofield, J.B. Roberts, (?) Scofield, Geo. Rudd, and J.D.
Rockefeller. "Captain Scofield was a personal friend of John D.
Rockefeller and one of the few men with whom the world's richest man
played golf" (Cleveland. Vol. 1. Lewis Publishing Co., 1918, p. 216).
Rear pastedown with old bookseller's ink-stamp, else contents clean.
Minor staining to front cover, touch of fraying to the spine head. Very
Good.
Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil, was the wealthiest American ever.
When he died, his fortune approximated 1/65th of the Gross National
Product. In today's dollars, his personal fortune would be worth about
$190 billion compared to that of, say, Jeff Bezos's $150 billion or so.
At times his wealth actually exceeded the annual federal budget. Books
signed by this great businessman are extremely scarce. (#019153)
