[WEBSTER, Daniel] MACOMB, Alexander. A TREATISE ON MARTIAL LAW, AND
COURTS-MARTIAL; AS PRACTISED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Charleston, SC: Printed and Published for the Author, by J. Hoff, 1809.
First Edition. Octavo (5-1/8" x 8-1/4"), [10], [7]-340 pages, in
contemporary sheep with gilt-lettered black morocco spine label. Daniel
Webster's copy of the first important original American work,
specifically adapted to United States law, on martial law and
courts-martial with Webster's SIGNATURE as "D. Webster" on the front
endpaper and again on the half-title page. There are also 6 pages with
brief underlining or annotations including the following phrase
underlined: "for lawyers being in general as utterly ignorant of
military law and practice." Laid in are 2 black-and-white snapshots from
1955 of Webster's birthplace and an envelope containing a 6" x 5-1/2"
sample of the wallpaper from Webster's boyhood bedroom. A rare book in
itself, especially interesting as Webster's copy and with the added
ephemera. Early ink writing on the endpaper and half-title page but not
marring Webster's writing. The front board, with the armorial bookplate
of the Pepperrell family, is detached along with the front endpaper. But
for the detached cover the book is in clean, Near Fine condition.

Macomb was the first student to receive formal training at West Point.
