[John Dryden:] The Medall. A Satyre against Sedition. By the Authour of Absalom and Achitophel. London: Printed for Jacob Tonson at the Judge’s Head in Chancery-lane, near Fleet-street, 1682. First edition, second issue (with the two Latin lines at end). Slim 4to (21.5 cm) bound in full modern vellum, page edges dyed brown; [12], 20 pp. ESTC R17608; Wing D2311; Pforzheimer 331; Macdonald 13aii.

First edition of Dryden’s bitterly satirical attack on the Whigs and the Earl of Shaftesbury, who, having been cleared of charges of treason, was awarded a medal by his followers. Full of "unsparing invective," the poem is preceded by a prefatory "Epistle to the Whigs" and a commendatory verse by Nahum Tate. Some bowing to the boards as often with vellum bindings; mild toning to the leaves, most noticeable on the first and last leaf, some bleeding from the dye used to stain the page edges, else clean and crisp, firmly bound. A nice copy.
