Frederic Louis Norden: Travels in Egypt and Nubia. By Frederick Lewis Norden. F.R.S. Captain of the Danish Navy. Translated from the Original Published by command of his Majesty the King of Denmark: and Enlarged with observations from ancient and modern authors, that have written on the antiquities of Egypt, by Dr. Peter Templeman. London: Printed for Lockyer Davis and Charles Reymers in Holborn; Printers to the Royal Society, MDCCLVII [1757]. First edition thus. Two volumes bound in one; 8vo (21.5 cm) in early/period polished calf; xl, 154 pp.; 323, [6] pp.; with the publisher's adverts, 7 engraved folding plates, including the folding map frontispiece (complete). ESTC T6299; Blackmer 1211.

First octavo edition of the English translation of Norden's travels through Egypt and Sudan which first appeared in French in 1752-55. An important early European account of the region, with much on the pyramids, Luxor, descriptions of Cairo and Alexandria, etc. Binding with bumping and wear to the extremities, front joint cracked but secure; contents with mild toning and occasional light soiling and spotting; one plate with old tape repair to the verso, small red stain on title-page; else quite clean and sound, firmly bound.
