Pair of Mounted Cabinet Photos of Drawings of the Baker Deep Sea Diving
System.
A rather amazing set of cabinet card photos of drawings showing the
inside and outside of “The Baker Deep Sea Diving System’, which
apparently was for use by salvage divers at shipwrecks. Anchored to the
seabed by rock-filled feet, the ‘system’ is three stories high, plus an
upper control deck and a sort of observation penthouse. In the cut-away
view workers can be seen aiding divers exiting through the air lock at
the base of the structure, while engineers operate the systems that keep
it going and an off-duty crewman relaxes in an easy chair in the lounge
and reads a newspaper. The bridge contains, as every bridge should, a
ship’s wheel, though how exactly that steers this stationary contraption
is not instantly evident. We have, quite sadly, been unable to unearth
any further information about this ground-breaking technology which
appears to have been proposed c.1890-1900.
Two Cabinet cards. 12”x14” [mounts], 7.5”x9.25” [images]. Mount edges
chipped, minor soil. [45698] $450
