WHARTON, Edith. FIGHTING FRANCE. FROM DUNKERQUE TO BELFORT. New York:
Charles Scribner's Sons, 1915. First Edition. Original red cloth,
lettered in gilt; published 24 November 1915 in an edition of 5400
copies. This copy with a small hand-written card paper-clipped to the
top edge of the front endpaper: "from/Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt/Oyster
Bay/L.I." In addition the book is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Wharton on the
front endpaper with a few lines of verse in the style of Arthur
Sullivan: "'Watchman, what of the night?/Through the storm-wrack send
thy glance!'/'In the East I see a light--/That light is France.'/Edith
Wharton/Dec. 1, 1916/Paris." A scarce book to find signed, especially
with such a fine inscription. The most recent copy we could locate at
auction, in THE EARLE J. BERNHEIMER COLLECTION OF FIRST EDITIONS OF
AMERICAN AUTHORS, sold in 1950. Spine sunned, gilt still clear. Near
