ALGER, Horatio. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS). New York, 7 April 1893. A
brief AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED on a small (4-1/4" x 6-7/8") piece of
paper as "Horatio Alger, Jr." to Henry Parch. In full: "I send you my
signature on the next leaf, but have no suitable quotation in mind."
After being charged with "the abominable and revolting crime of gross
familiarity with boys," Alger left his role as pastor of the First
Unitarian Church and Society. He became famous for his "rags to riches"
juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble
backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard
work, determination, courage, and honesty. Normal creases from mailing.
