Richard Dighton: A London Nuisance. Pl[at]e 1st[-6th]. London: Thomas McLean, [c. 1821-30 or later]. Inscription: "Richard Dighton invt et sculpt. Pubd by Thos. McLean 26 Haymarket London." Six hand-colored etchings; approx. 385 x 265 mm (15 1/4 x 10 3/8 in). Some light toning and dust-soiling to the margins, top edges with small remnants of archival mounting tape to the versos, else clean and fresh, very good or better.

A complete set of Dighton's amusing depictions of nuisances and dangers commonly encountered in the streets of Regency-era London: 1. Passing a Mud Cart. 2. A Heavy Fall of Snow. 3. One of the Advantages of Oil over Gas. 4. A Pleasant way to Lose an Eye. 5. One of the Advantages of Gas over Oil. 6. An Unlucky Hit. The first of Dighton's "nuisances" originally appeared, uncolored, in 1821. This set may be McLean's reprint of the collected series in 1830, or possibly later restrikes. The hand-coloring, tastefully done, certainly appears to be of a later vintage. Regardless, a handsome set.
