(SCIENCE) Foster, Samuel and John Twysden. MISCELLANEA: SIVE LUCUBRATIONES MATHEMATICAE [Miscellanies: or, Mathematical Lucubrations, of Mr. Samuel Foster. Published, and Many of Them Translated Into English, by the Care and Industry of John Twysden. Whereunto He Hath Annexed Some Things of His Own...]. London: Printed, by R. & W. Leybourn. 1659. First edition. Folio. Complete in 19 parts in 1 (7 with their own title pages). 177 leaves, including 2 blanks and Latin and English title pages. Text in parallel Latin and English. Illustrated with 11 copper engraved plates (1, folding) and some text woodcuts & copper engravings. Nicely rebound (20th. century) in antique style, plain calf with red morocco label over marbled boards. Some light soiling at blank fore-edges. Very scarce.    $6,000.00 (trade discount allowed)
This is a complicated volume, in numerous sections. Our copy has been compared with the OCLC digital record of the University of Michigan copy and it collates exactly.
Foster (d. 1652) wrote these miscellaneous pieces for his pupils. Included are descriptions of his Planetary Instruments, Astroscopium and Geometrical Square, a catalog of fixed stars, observations of eclipses by himself, John Palmer and Twysden, a method of projecting the celestial sphere, etc. Copies are found with different counts of folding plates.  This all depends on how they were bound into the volume, either vertical (not folded) or horizontal with a fold.  Wing F1634.
