[Samuel Butler; Zachary Grey, ed.; William Hogarth, illus.]: Hudibras, in Three Parts, Written in the Time of the Late Wars: Corrected and Amended. With large Annotations, and a Preface, by Zachary Grey, LL.D. Adorn'd with a new Set of Cuts. Cambridge: Printed by J. Bentham, Printer to the University [and London: printed by J. Bettenham], for W. Innys, A. Ward, Mess. J. and P. Knapton, [et al], MDCCXLIV [1744]. First edition thus. Two volumes, 8vo (20.5 cm), in early/period mottled calf, rebacked in later mottled morocco, gilt-lettered spine labels; [2], xiv, xxxvi, [42], 424, [16] pp.; complete with the 42-page list of subscribers, portrait frontispiece (by Vertue), and 16 engraved plates after William Hogarth by Mynde, 6 of which are folding. ESTC T2679.

A handsome example of the first Zachary Grey edition of Butler's satirical epic, with Grey's preface and extensive annotations: "the best edition" according to Dibdin and Lowndes. Of added interest are the sixteen lively Hogarth plates. Bindings with modest rubbing and bumping to the corners; vol. I lacking the rear (blank) endpaper, one folding plate with wear to the fore-edge, a few occasional small spots and light soiling to the leaves, otherwise an unusually clean and fresh copy, with fine, crisp impressions of the plates.
