Alain Rene Le Sage: The Devil upon Two Sticks. Translated from the Diable Boiteux of M. Le Sage. To which are prefixed, Asmodeus's Crutches, a Critical Letter upon the Work; and Dialogues between two Chimneys of Madrid. Adorned with Cuts. Edinburgh: Printed by A. Donaldson and J. Reid. For Alexander Donaldson, MDCCLXII [1762]. First edition thus. Small 8vo (17.5 cm) in full period calf; 292 [i.e., 291], [19] pp.; with an engraved frontispiece and four engraved plates. ESTC T165090.

An uncommon illustrated edition of Le Sage's perennially popular satirical fantasy: ESTC locates only four copies in institutions in the UK and only one in the U.S., at Indiana's Lilly Library. Binding a bit rubbed and marked, wear to the extremities; front joint and inner hinge professionally repaired; frontispiece a little pulled at the gutter, some offsetting and browning to the title-page, contents with mild toning and occasional small spots, but generally quite clean and sound, firmly bound.
