Richard Hakluyt: The Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques & Discoveries of the English Nation Made by Sea or Overland to the Remote and Farthest Distant Quarters of the Earth at Any Time Within the Compass of These 1600 Years. [WITH:] The Voyages, Traffiques and Discoveries of Foreign Voyagers with Other Matters Relating Thereto Contained in the "Navigations." London/New York: J. M. Dent and Sons/E. P. Dutton, 1927-28. Together, ten volumes (complete); 8vo (20 cm), uniformly bound in three-quarter forest green leather by Bayntun of Bath, spines lettered and decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers, top page edges gilt; 468, 461, 387, 386, 355, 360, 400, 314, 461, 456 pp.; illustrated.

The first eight volumes are introduced by the poet John Masefield. Volumes nine and ten, encompassing the voyages of non-English explorers, which "this edition...was not originally intended to include," are introduced by Ernest Rhys. Bindings with very modest wear and rubbing to a few corners and joints, three vols. with wear to the spine heads, else about Fine; contents lightly toned but very clean and sound, firmly and attractively bound. A handsome set of Hakluyt's Voyages, a foundational work of exploration and discovery first published in 1598-1600, "which, by its scholarship and comprehensiveness, transcended all geographical literature to date" (Encyclopaedia Britannica). Well illustrated with sepia and black&white portraits, drawings, maps, facsimiles, etc.
