(CONROY, Pat). THE SHAKO. The Magazine of the South Carolina Corps of
Cadets. Vol. 33, #1. [Charleston, SC]: The Citadel, Fall 1964. First
Edition. Quarto (9" x 12") bound in pictorial wraps. The scarce official
organ of the student body at the Citadel, this issue distinguished by
the presence of very early writing by Pat Conroy, author of THE GREAT
SANTINI, THE PRINCE OF TIDES, and other novels, many of which include
his alma mater to various degrees. This issue features the story "A
Monologue of Drums," the first piece of fiction (he had previously
published poetry) by him to appear in THE SHAKO and possibly the first
published anywhere, as he had just turned 19 years old at the time. This
appearance predates his first book, THE BOO, by 6 years. Also included
is Vol. 34, #2, Spring 1966, which does not contain any writing by
Conroy. Very light use. Near Fine. (#017234) $750.00
