Weber, J. C.
Die Alpen-Pflanzen Deutschlands und der Schweiz in colorirten Abbildungen
nach der Natur und in natürlicher Grösse. (The alpine-plants from Germany
and Switzerland in colored illustrations after nature.) Mit systematisch
geordnetem Text von Dr. C.A. Kranz. [Rare in Dust Jackets and Original
Boxes]

*Munchen [Munich]: Christian Kiser, [1867 / 1868]. First Edition with all
400 Images. Hardcover. GREATLY DISCOUNTED. WAS $4,500. Second Edition
[1867] with First Edition of the Supplement [1868], TOGETHER COMPRISING THE
FIRST EDITION CONTAINING ALL 400 ILLUSTRATIONS. Hardcover. A Near Fine to
Fine copy of this remarkable work consisting of 400 colored plates showing
flowering plants from the Alpine region with the plant names given both in
German and in Latin, the bindings are in excellent condition (showing only
light rubbing at the spine ends and board corners and some cracks and
splits to some of the hinges) and the front board illustrations and spine
lettering and illustration of each volume in brilliant gilt (with only mild
oxidation to a couple of the volumes). Each volume shows some foxing to the
edges of its closed page block and the illustrations show only occasional
bits of foxing. Each volume measures approximately 5 inches X 3 1/2 inches
and comes in its RARE original dust jacket, with some small wear and small
tears where the the front and rear panels join their respective spine
panels -- otherwise with such jackets showing only minor wear and minor
chipping, and light sunning to the spine panels. The set is housed in the
RARE ORIGINAL BOXES, with the first three [undated but published in 1867]
volumes housed together in their original box and the 1868 supplement
housed separately in its own box. The boxes are in about Very Good
condition with some splitting at the seams. The larger box also shows a
couple of tape repairs. This second edition and its supplement constitute
the first set of volumes to contain all 400 illustrations. [Some History:
The 1846 first edition was published in two volumes which together
contained 200 plates. A third volume of 100 additional plates was published
in 1856, making 300 total plates published. Then, in 1867, the second
edition of those first three volumes was issued, with a fourth,
supplemental, volume of 100 additional plates being added in 1868, making a
total of 400 plates in the set. Thus, the three 1867 volumes -- together
with the 1868 supplemental volume -- comprise the first complete set of 400
plates described in this listing -- thereafter both the third edition
(1872) and the fourth edition (1880) were published in four volumes having
a total of 400 plates in each such edition.] Thus, we have here the first
complete set of all 400 plates. Such complete sets are quite scarce,
especially when in a condition as nice as are these volumes. Copies in
their original dust jackets are extraordinarily difficult to find (and are
perhaps even RARE) and those in a condition as nice as is this set in their
original dust jackets and original boxes are QUITE RARE INDEED. A
remarkable and COLLECTION-DISTINGUISHING SET which is MENTIONED ON PAGE 87,
AND OF WHICH AN IMAGE APPEARS ON PAGE 88, of Mark Godburn's excellent work
titled "Nineteenth-Century Dust-Jackets" published by Oak Knoll Press in
the US and by Private Libraries Association in the UK (2016). Fine / Very
Good +. Item #2659*

Smith, Marie; Truman, Harry [Foreword]
The President's Lady: an Intimate Biography of Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson
[SIGNED BY LADY BIRD JOHNSON -- PROVENANCE CONGRESSMAN HORACE KORNEGAY]

*New York: Random House, 1964. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover.
GREATLY DISCOUNTED. WAS $675. A Fine copy of the first edition, first
printing (some pushing and darkening to the spine ends, Horace Kornegay's
bookplate to the front pastedown -- yellow topstain remains quite nice in
color), in a Very Good + dust jacket (spine lightly sunned, some minor
general rubbing and a few - mostly rather small - chips), SIGNED BY LADY
BIRD JOHNSON on the front free endpaper as follows: "with best wishes, /
Lady Bird Johnson". Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Johnson was America's
thirty-second first lady (and wife of Lyndon B. Johnson, the nation's
thirty-sixth President). Formerly the Second Lady of the United States, she
became the nation's First Lady upon the 1963 assassination of President
John F. Kennedy. (It was Mrs. Johnson's business acumen that brought wealth
to her family.) Considered a factually fuller and less fawning biography
than the earlier biography of Mrs. Johnson authored by Ruth Montgomery. In
commenting on this biography, the New York times described Lady Bird
Johnson as being "what many women wish they could be". An ASSOCIATION COPY
having an EXCELLENT PROVENANCE, this copy belonged to US CONGRESSMAN HORACE
KORNEGAY (who served during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations) whose
bookplate graces the front pastedown. Copies of her biography SIGNED BY
LADY BIRD JOHNSON ARE QUITE SCARCE, and are particularly so when in a
condition as nice as is this copy. A SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY and, as such,
QUITE SCARCE INDEED. Fine / very good +. Fine / very good +. Item #937*

Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth
Sangen om Hiawatha [The Song About Hiawatha]; [The Song of Hiawatha]

*Copenhagen: Otto B. Wroblemskys, 1860. Wrappers. GREATLY DISCOUNTED. WAS
$450. A Near Very Good copy of the first Danish edition, first printing, of
Longfellow's great work, a long Poem in the form of an Epic which tells the
story of the life of the Indian Hiawatha, in a Good example of the RARE
DUST JACKET. [Many of the leaves/pages are unopened at their top and or
leading edge, so the book likely remains unread.) A copy distinct from all
other copies known to us in that it wears the original dust jacket which,
while showing significant wear -- including the loss of the spine panel, is
not only quite NOTABLE COPY WEARING AN IMPORTANT DUST JACKET for this work
but also is an IMPORTANT LONGFELLOW DUST JACKET. This copy is discussed ON
PAGES 89 AND 90, AND IS SHOWN ON PAGE 90, of Mark Godburn's excellent work
titled "Nineteenth-Century Dust-Jackets" published by Oak Knoll Press in
the US and by Private Libraries Association in the UK. In his excellent
book, Godburn states: "Jackets issued in northern Europe in the 1860s and
1870s show similar patterns of use and development as those issued
elsewhere. Swiss, Danish, Dutch and Swedish jackets were issued over
bindings of cloth, boards and wrappers, and had printing that ranged from
minimal to the widely popular title-page format. Even the practice of
discarding jackets before or just after purchase seems to have been as
common in northern Europe as it was in other places. Documentary evidence
for this has been found on two Scandinavian jackets, one issued in Denmark,
the other in Sweden. // The Danish jacket was issued on Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow's Sagen om Hiawatha (1860). This book was bound in printed
wrappers and had a separate coarse brown jacket with the author and title
on the front together with the line: "Expl. tages ikke tilbage uden dette
omslag" ('Copy not taken back without this wrapping.'). The Swedish jacket
carried a similar statement.... // That at least two publishers found it
necessary to print such statements directly on their jackets suggest
several things besides the proclivity of booksellers and customers to
discard them. It suggests that for some publishers dust-jackets were not a
novelty or an option by this time but a necessity, even for books in
wrappers that were likely to be rebound after purchase." Thus, at the time
this book was published, dust jackets were considered (or beginning to be
considered) to be more important than they had been considered to be
earlier in the Century, when either the sellers and their customers likely
would have previously simply have discarded them, the seller before putting
them out for sale and in other cases the customer discarding them after
purchase of the desired book. In short, the dust jacket was finally being
seen to be an important component of the book. While this copy shows
foxing/toning to the wrappers and to the early pages, as well as a crack
near the spine center, and the dust jacket is, as mentioned above, worn,
this is an IMPORTANT COPY and, as Mark Godburn has stated to this seller,
is "No doubt the earliest surviving Longfellow jacket." A Good + or perhaps
a bit better RARE HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW ITEM, being a Danish
publication of Longfellow's work "The Song of Hiawatha" wearing THE
EARLIEST SURVIVING LONGFELLOW DUST JACKET presently known to exist. **RARE
INDEED. Very Good / good. Item #2724*
