Berrigan, Ted; Gallup, Dick
Poster for a Poetry Reading by Ted Berrigan and Dick Gallup at St. Mark’s
Church in New York

New York: March 28 [no year stated]. First Edition. [No binding]. A Fine
copy of the first edition of this Ted Berrigan poster advertising a reading
by Berrigan and Dick Gallup (whose name could conceivably have inspired the
poster) at St. Mark’s Church in New York on March 28th, ______ as part of
the Poetry Project. The Poetry Project at St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery
was founded in the summer of 1966 as a direct successor to, and as a
continuation of, the reading series previously held at various coffee
houses [such as Les Deux Mégots on East Seventh Street and Moe and Cindy
Margules’s Café Le Metro then at 149 Second Avenue] that had flourished on
the Lower East Side since 1960. [An interesting history of the series can
be found at www.poetryproject.org/about/history/.] The Poster measures
approximately 8.5 inches X 11 inches, is printed in black and white on the
recto only, and is illustrated with an image of sprawling nudes. In Fine
condition, the poster shows minor tanning to outer edges, and two subtle
horizontal folds, presumably from being mailed. A Fine original poster.

Russell, Bertrand
An Outline of Intellectual Rubbish: A Hilarious Catalogue of Organized and
Individual Stupidity

Girard, Kansas: Haldeman-Julius Publications, [1943]. First Edition, First
Printing. Wrappers. A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of the first
publication of this Bertrand Russell Essay in book format, bound in the
Publisher's original yellow wrappers (short diagonal line moving from the
right margin into the title block on the front wrapper -- apparently a
production defect, leaves toned). The Essay later appeared in Russell's
"Unpopular Essays" (1950). Russell began the Essay: "Man is a rational
animal-so at least I have been told." He then goes to show that Man is not
always rational. For example, he states: ""If the matter is one that can be
settled by observation, make the observation yourself. Aristotle could have
avoided the mistake of thinking that women have fewer teeth than men, by
the simple device of asking Mrs. Aristotle to keep her mouth open while he
counted. He did not do so because he thought he knew. Thinking that you
know when in fact you don't is a fatal mistake, to which we are all prone."
Bertrand Russell won the 1950 Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of
his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian
ideals and freedom of thought". We seldom see copies of this publication of
this Essay. A Very Good + copy. UNCOMMON TO SCARCE. Very good +. Item #2738

Price: $75.00 Russell, Bertrand TEMPORARILY AVAILABLE FOR $25.

Smith, Marie; Truman, Harry [Foreword]
The President's Lady: an Intimate Biography of Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson
[SIGNED BY LADY BIRD JOHNSON -- PROVENANCE CONGRESSMAN HORACE KORNEGAY]

New York: Random House, 1964. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A
Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (some pushing and darkening
to the spine ends, Horace Kornegay's bookplate to the front pastedown --
yellow topstain remains quite nice in color), in a Very Good + dust jacket
(spine lightly sunned, some minor general rubbing and a few - mostly rather
small - chips), SIGNED BY LADY BIRD JOHNSON on the front free endpaper as
follows: "with best wishes, / Lady Bird Johnson". Claudia Alta "Lady Bird"
Johnson was America's thirty-second first lady (and wife of Lyndon B.
Johnson, the nation's thirty-sixth President). Formerly the Second Lady of
the United States, she became the nation's First Lady upon the 1963
assassination of President John F. Kennedy. (It was Mrs. Johnson's business
acumen that brought wealth to her family.) Considered a factually fuller
and less fawning biography than the earlier biography of Mrs. Johnson
authored by Ruth Montgomery. In commenting on this biography, the New York
times described Lady Bird Johnson as being "what many women wish they could
be". An ASSOCIATION COPY having an EXCELLENT PROVENANCE, this copy belonged
to US CONGRESSMAN HORACE KORNEGAY (who served during the Kennedy and
Johnson Administrations) whose bookplate graces the front pastedown. Copies
of her biography SIGNED BY LADY BIRD JOHNSON ARE QUITE SCARCE, and are
particularly so when in a condition as nice as is this copy. A SIGNED
ASSOCIATION COPY and, as such, QUITE SCARCE INDEED. Fine / very good +.

Chavanne, Dr. Josef
Die Sahara oder Von Oase zu Oase. Bilder aus dem Natur & Volksleben in der
grossen afrikanischen Wuste [in the RARE dust jacket] [The Sahara or From
Oasis to Oasis. Pictures from the nature & people life in the big African
desert]

Leipzig: A. Hartlebens Verlag, 1879. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover.
A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's
original ornate green binding (slight rubbing to the board corners and
spine ends, a bit of oxidation to the board and spine decoration and
lettering), in a Fine example of the RARE illustrated dust jacket (a few
small tape repairs dust jacket's verso), complete with 7 color
illustrations (each with a tissue guard) and dozens of woodcuts. The volume
also contains a color map of the Sahara to the book's rear. The map is in
Fine condition and, having come cleanly detached, is loosely laid in. Dr.
Josef Chavanne (1846-1902) was an Austrian geographer and noted explorer of
Africa who wanted in this book "to present a vivid and correct conception
of the Sahara, the multifarious natural character of its individual natural
regions, the life, customs and habits of its inhabitants to the reader in
vivid portrayal Eyes lead." A BEAUTIFUL AND REMARKABLE COPY WHICH IS
MENTIONED ON PAGE 88, AND OF WHICH AN IMAGE APPEARS ON PAGE 89, of Mark
Godburn's excellent work titled "Nineteenth-Century Dust-Jackets" published
by Oak Knoll Press in the US and by Private Libraries Association in the
UK. Of this book, Godburn states: "Another German jacket is one of the more
attractive examples produced in any country during the mid-Victorian
period. 'Die Sahara oder Von Oase zu Oase' (1879) was bound in green cloth
ornately decorated in black and gold with gilt insets of a camel, a horse
and robed natives. The front of the cream-coloured jacket was covered with
a large illustratration that did not appear in the book. It depicted an
oasis-like settlement in the foreground with temples and gardens shimmering
in the distance, all bordered by palms and other flora. At the foot of the
illustration was the signature of the Viennese printer R. V. Waldheim. The
jacket spine was printed and there was extensive advertising on the back.
The book was an expensive production inside and out with silk endpapers, a
large folding map in colour, and tissue-guarded lithographic plates in
addition to the beautiful binding and lovely jacket. Some booksellers and
purchasers must have wondered whether to display the binding alone or in
the jacket." [Please Note: Due to the book's weight, international shipping
costs to Buyer will exceed the amount quoted by this site. US Postal
regulations require that international shipment be by Priority Mail.] A
BEAUTIFUL COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION IN A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL DUST JACKET.
