1854 Prospectus Letter for an American Translation of Gauss’s Important
Book on Planetary Motions.
Charles Henry Davis, Commander, U.S.N., informs you that he has
completed a translation of Gauss’s Theoria Motus Corporum Coelestium and
plans to publish it as soon as he receives enough subscriptions to pay
for the printing.
Charles Henry Davis [1807-1877] had a long and distinguished career,
working for the Coast Survey, researching tides & currents, and
commanding the Western Gunboat Flotilla during the victorious Battler of
Memphis in the Civil War. At the time of this translation and letter
writing he was the Superintendent of American Nautical Almanac Office.
Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss [1777-1855] was a noted German mathematician
and physicist, considered by many contemporaries to be "the greatest
mathematician since antiquity”. His work on the motion of planetoids
disturbed by large planets was published in 1809.

Standard courtesies to institutions and the trade; Postage charges are

outside the U.S. will be billed at cost. We accept returns if we are
notified within ten days of your receipt of the books-please ask for
full instructions and terms. Massachusetts residents must add 6.25%
state sales tax.
