[JEFFERSON, Thomas] SOWERBY, E. Millicent. CATALOGUE OF THE LIBRARY OF
THOMAS JEFFERSON. Charlottesville, VA: University Press of Virginia,
(1983). Second Edition. Five quarto (8-1/2" x 11") volumes in
publisher's cloth. Compiled with annotations by Millicent E. Sowerby.
Originally published in the 1950s, this is a list of the books that
Thomas Jefferson contributed from his personal library to the Library of
Congress, based on Jefferson's personal records and the Library of
Congress records, with extensive annotations. Although there is no
stated limitation, the foreword indicates that 400 copies were printed.
“The set has not been available for general purchase for a number of
years, and seldom does one see the title in lists distributed by general
and rare book dealers. This printing is not a new edition but will
provide 400 copies for scholars, book collectors, and libraries who
failed to procure a set from the first printing, or whose initial
volumes are beginning to show the hand of time and heavy use.” Volume I
contains titles related to Civil and Natural History; Volume II,
Philosophy – Moral; Volume III, Philosophy – Moral (continued); Volume
IV, Philosophy (concluded) and Fine Arts; and Volume V, Fine Arts
(concluded) and Sources, Etc. Contents clean; light wear to the
bindings. Near Fine. (#019560)        $450.00
