SMITH, Stevie. TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS). London, 3 January 1943. A
two-page TYPED LETTER SIGNED in pencil on both sides of a 4" x 4-5/8"
sheet of Tower House stationery to poet Douglas Newton. Mostly a chatty
letter about getting together but with a fine conclusion: "I got THE
COMPANY SHE KEEPS [Mary McCarthy] for review and read every word. I
think it is clever but horrible. There is something embarrassing about
it that I find also sometimes in Rosamund Lehmann. ('sometimes' for
politeness). Ha ha. I think [William] Plomer's DOUBLE LIVES is a fine
book and the right way to write about yourself." Usual fold from
mailing. About Fine. (#019480) $500.00
