The American Dispensatory, Containing the Operations of Pharmacy; Together with the Natural, Chemical, Pharmaceutical and Medical History of the Different Substances Employed in Medicine; Illustrated and Explained, according to the Principles of Modern Chemistry: Comprehending the Improvements in Dr. Duncan's Second Edition of the Edinburgh New Dispensatory. The Arrangement Simplified, and the Whole Adapted to the Practice of Medicine and Pharmacy in the United States. With several copperplates, exhibiting the new system of Chemical Characters, and representing the most useful Apparatus.

Philadelphia: Printed by A. Bartram, for Thomas Dobson, 1806. First edition. Copperplate engravings. Full leather. Octavo. xvi, 787 pages. Near fine. Bound in full calf over boards with red spine label titled in gilt. Present binding looks to be mid-19th century. Textblock slightly trimmed. A few scuffs and edge peels to exterior boards, but still quite handsome and sound.

This book was the first attempt at a standardized description of drugs and their preparation for medical use in the United States. Dr. Coxe studied in Edinburgh and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1794. He was an early and enthusiastic advocate of vaccination.
