Four 1880s M.F. Tobin Baseball Chromolithograph Trade Cards.
Four attractive trade cards from one of several baseball-related series
printed by M.F. Tobin Litho Co. in the 1880s. M.F. Tobin Lithographers
of New York was founded in 1877 by Irish-born Michael F. Tobin, and for
30 years published fine art prints, trade cards, illustrated books,
children’s books, and related lithographed and chromolithographed items.
Tobin was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the Navy under
Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, and after the war his firm published a
very realistic facsimile of Abraham Lincoln’s famous ‘Bixby Letter’
which has given false hope of riches to hopeful collectors and annoyed
at least four score of autograph dealers ever since.
Cards. About 3”x4.5”. Minor soil, light wear. Carefully removed from an
album with a slight amount of paper residue from the album page on the
back. $250 for the four.
