PETTIT, Eber M. SKETCHES IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD,
COMPRISING MANY THRILLING INCIDENTS OF THE ESCAPE OF FUGITIVES FROM
SLAVERY, AND THE PERILS OF THOSE WHO AIDED THEM. Fredonia, NY: W.
McKinstry and Son, 1879. First Edition. Printed salmon wraps; 174 pages.
A somewhat scarce title, dedicated to Frederick Douglass, this is the
only copy we have been able to find published in wraps as opposed to
hardcover. Pettit was a traveling salesman, mostly of patented medicines
and leather goods, who would hide runaway slaves aboard his wagon. Some
copies of the hardcover edition, but not all, mention a portrait, in one
case specified as an albumen photograph, but there is no portrait here
nor any indication there ever was one. Work, page 338. Contents fresh;
covers soiled with fading to the front, some chipping to the edges and
to the top and bottom of the spine. Very Good. (#018469) $1,500
