Greetings to All.
Subject to the terms set forth below, today and tomorrow we offer the
below-described work at a substantial discount:

Shackelford, Jane D. [Shackelford, Jane Dabney]; Jones, Lois Mailou:
Illustrator
The Child's Story of the Negro [SIGNED]

*Washington DC: The Associated Publishers Inc., 1938. First Edition, First
Printing. Hardcover. A Very Good + copy of the first edition, first
printing, of Jane D. Shackelford's Debut Book, INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND DATED
by Jane D. Shackelford on the front pastedown as follows: "Inscribed for /
Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Shearer // - // Jane Dabney Shackelford // July 18,
1939". The book has been illustrated by Lois Mailou Jones, one of the most
notable figures to gain notoriety for her art while living as a black
expatriate in Paris during the 1930s and 1940s. Designed for use by
teacher's, Shackelford's purpose in writing the book was to make African
American History accessible to children. In 1937, the University of Chicago
Journal of Negro History stated of her work: "The author has made clear the
enthusiasm, the grim determination, and the compelling urge which made
Phillis Wheatley a successful writer, Ira Aldridge a successful actor,
Frederick Douglass a forceful orator, Booker T. Washington a great
educator, and Paul Laurence Dunbar a noted poet. She has done an admirable
piece of work. Her teaching aids will be greatly valued by those who use
the book for classroom purposes." In Very Good condition, the volume has
some rubbing to the spine ends and board corners, a crack to the front
hinge (internal), slight handling soil, settling to the page block, and a
small gap between it and the binding's spine. The rear pastedown shows some
evidence of an erased pencil notation and the answers to the "RIDDLES" at
the end of the book are written in faint pencil under their respective
questions. Copies of the first edition are uncommon, those in collectable
condition are quite so, and copies in collectible condition and SIGNED by
Shackelford are SCARCE. Very Good. Item #2778*
