" Vaux was admitted to the bar in 1808, and rose rapidly to prominence in his profession, although he only became judge of the court of common pleas of Philadelphia about a year before his death. Embodying the Quaker values of morality and public service, Vaux helped found Pennsylvania's public-school system." Inscribed by the author. Vol I, inside front cover, " Roberts Vaux_- Hodie et non cras. 1829". Francis Lieber, original name Franz Lieber, (born March 18, 1798, Berlin, died Oct. 2, 1872, New York City) , German-born was himself a U. S. Political philosopher and jurist, best known for formulating the “laws of war. ”13 volumes, plus extra volumes 9 & 10, 15 total volumes. Red cloth. Generally sound but various faults including a few loose covers. Edges untrimmed. Contemporary binding. Paper spine labels worn. Volumes aged. Volume I contains the Inscription. Both of Vol I's covers detached and spine chipped.
