FORD, Gerald R. TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS) ON WHITE HOUSE STATIONERY.
Washington, 12 June 1975. Fine letter thanking Congressman Wilbur D.
Mills for supporting his veto on the Surface Mining Control and
Reclamation Act of 1975, SIGNED "Jerry Ford." Mills was a Democrat from
Arkansas who, as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee from
1958 to 1974, played a major role in the establishment of Medicare.
Often called the most powerful man in Washington, he declined to run for
re-election in 1976 after two public incidents with a stripper named
