RUDY, Charles. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS). Ottsville, PA, 10 August
1942. A two-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by the sculptor to an
acquaintance congratulating him [Rudy won a Guggenheim in 1942] with
much news about his activities. He tells of his good fortune "especially
at this time when there are no longer public and private commissions to
be had.... We have been here over a year now. Cooper Union and I parted
company in the spring of 1941 and, though it was a great experience and
very interesting, it was the best thing for me after being there ten
years.... I've been carving and modelling and last winter I experimented
in casting in lead in my barn." Much more. Some folds and wrinkling with
closed tears at the center with no loss of text. Very Good.

Charles Rudy achieved national status as a sculptor for his work on
public buildings across the country, beginning with his WPA commission,
along with Ben Shahn, at the Bronx Post Office to his work on the
controversial Confederate Memorial at Stone Mountain, Georgia.
