[KIRBY, R. S.]. THE WONDERFUL AND SCIENTIFIC MUSEUM: OR, MAGAZINE OF
REMARKABLE CHARACTERS; Including All the Curiosities of Nature and Art,
From the Remotest Period to the Present Time, Drawn from Every
Authentic Source. London: T. Keating, 1803 - 1820. First Edition. Six
octavo (5" x 8-1/4") volumes bound in 19th Century 1/2 calf leather with
matching corners and marbled boards, gilt-decorated spines with
gilt-lettered morocco spine labels. Illustrated with 112 full-page
engravings (1 folding) as well as several engravings in the text. A
remarkable work presenting a sort of circus side-show of interesting,
amusing and/or grotesque people and things, an early-day Ripley and
Guinness combined. The physically deformed, unusually aged, miserly
misfits, eccentric hermits, amazing muscular specimens, criminally
insane, and many other characters as well as freakish animas are
described and illustrated. Bookplates of James McDonald and small
bookseller label of Hugh Hopkins to front pastedowns. Complete sets are
quite scarce. Offsetting from plates to text, occasional foxing but
generally clean, two plates with short closed tears, one with large
corner-chip repaired. Chip to the top of the first volume, otherwise
only mild wear. Overall Near Fine. (#019985)    $2,500
