Dallas and T. Spencer Corbold, Assisted by William Baird and Adam White.
New York: Virtue & Yorston, n.d. [1877]. First Edition. Three quarto
(8-1/2" x 11-1-2") volumes bound in later half light brown morocco
leather with matching corners and marbled boards, matching marbled
endpapers, gilt-lettered and decorated spine with five raised bands, top
edges gilt. Illustrated with hundreds of text engravings and 143
lithographs, 37 of which are hand-colored. Early owner name "W.W.
Smith/Trinity Hall/Washington Pa./NY, Nov. 27, 1891" on front blank of
each volume with the faint red stamp "W.W. Smith" at the bottom bulked
text edge of each volume. William Wrenshall Smith opened his home as
Trinity Hall Academy in 1879, a boys’ military school. U. S. Grant Smith
assumed control in 1895, after which there was a waiting list for
enrollment. The academy closed in 1906. Contents fresh and clean. Very
light wear to bindings. Attractive, Near Fine set.
Joseph B. Holder (1824-1888), educated at Harvard Medical School, was
Curator of Invertebrate Zoology at the American Museum of Natural
