(INCUNABULA) Guido de Monte Rochen.   MANIPULUS CURATORUM... Strassburg: (Martin Flach). 10 May 1487. 4to.  ff.(122), with the final original blank, complete. 17th century Italian half calf over marbled boards. Calf spine with raised bands and parallel blind rules. Spine with contemporaneous paper title label at top and paper shelf label at bottom. With early 17th century inscription on the title of the Franciscan Convent of Mary Magdalene and another monastic inscription from Toulouse at the top of a2 recto. Text with some marginalia in 2 or 3 different early hands. 4-line title leaf with some old soiling. Top of rear hinge with a 1" crack. Some old faint dampstains in the text, but overall a very good copy with wide margins.    $6,000.00 (trade discount allowed)
The "Manual of the Curate" is a practical late medieval manual of pastoral ministry covering Baptism, Confession, Matrimony, Confirmation, etc., etc. Guido of Monte Rochen (fl. 1331) was a Spanish Priest and jurist. There are approx. 200 surviving medieval manuscripts of this text and the ISTC records an amazing 123 printed editions in the 15th century. It was first printed in 1473. Although there are presently 56 records of our edition worldwide, there are only 4 holdings in America, and there is no record of an auction sale (Rare Book Hub). According to the BM Catalog of 15th Century Books, this is the first dated book known to have been printed by Martin Flach (The Younger) in Strassburg.  His father, Martin Flach printed in Basel from about 1475. See Goff G-593; BMC I, 147; HCR 8194; ISTC ig00593000.
