[PERSE, St.-John] LÉGER, Alexis . BRIAND Inscribed to Walter Lippmann.
(Aurora, NY): Victor and Jacob Hammer/Wells College Press, (1943). First
Edition. Plain gray wraps with the title printed in red on the front
cover; [ii], 20, [1] pages. Published in an edition of only 150 copies,
this is the text of the speech given at New York University on 28 March
1942 for the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the birth of
Aristide Briand who served eleven terms as Prime Minister of France
during the French Third Republic.. The two men met in 1921 and Léger,
with the support of Briand, was appointed secretary general of foreign
affairs. Writing under the pen name of St.-John Perse, Leger was awarded
the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1960. This copy is INSCRIBED and
SIGNED by Leger on the verso of the half-title filling the page to
journalist Walter Lippmann: "A Walter Lippmann,/qui aura ile, pour mon
pays,/l'ami des bons et des mauvais/jours/affectueusement/Alexis [?]
Leger/Washington, 1943." Near Fine.

During the fascist German occupation of France (1940–44), Perse was
dismissed from office and deprived of his citizenship by the Pétain
government. Fleeing to the United States, he helped inspire the
Resistance with the cycles EXILE (1942) and WINDS (1946), which are
permeated with the spirit of national freedom. Walter Lippmann, winner
of two Pulitzer Prizes and one of the most influential journalists of
the twentieth century, was among the first to introduce the concept of
Cold War and coined the term "stereotype" in its modern psychological
meaning. (#019929) $1,000
