LONGFELLOW, Henry Wadsworth. THE HANGING OF THE CRANE. Boston: James R. 
Osgood, 1875. First Edition. Small quarto (6-1/2" x 8-3/4") bound in 
full red crushed levant leather with gilt fillet borders and decorative 
spine and turn-ins with watered silk endpapers, all edges gilt. BAL 
12166: First Issue of page 37. SIGNED "Henry W. Longfellow" and dated 
1875 on a front blank and with a contemporary carte-de-visite portrait 
of him mounted to the following front blank. Very minor wear. About Fine.

In 1874, Longfellow sold "The Hanging of the Crane" to the New York 
Ledger for $3,000, the highest price ever paid for a poem to that date.
