Ezra from Aardvark offers this association copy of Bert Dunne’s PLAY BALL, SON!
inscribed to Lee “Flame” Delhi (1892-1966), a redheaded pitcher from Arizona with a "blazing fastball”,
who played both minor and major league from 1910 (Los Angeles (aka the “Looloos” or “Seraphs”), Chicago White Sox, to name
one of each). In a famous 1912 game on a cold day in Chicago between the White Sox and the Detroit Tigers, “Flame”
or “Turk” Delhi had been given a chance to show his stuff because managers wanted to save the arm of the star pitcher. Delhi was thrown into the
game to face Hank Perry, who had himself been summoned to the Tiger’s mound with-little-notice,
to replace primadonna Ty Cobb, who had complained
about the train noise outside his hotel room, and had demanded that the entire
team be moved to another hotel. When his request was refused, the Georgia Peach packed his
things, got on a train, and headed back to Detroit. "Flame” Delhi faced and struck out Hank Perry.

Green cloth-covered boards (no dj), , wear to extremities, some spotting.

Inscription to front free endpaper reads: “To Lee ‘Flame’ Delhi one of the greatest pictures of poetry in motion on the mound
I ever saw.” Bert Dunne.

Good only, (but cool!). $75
