Profusely illustrated with a total of 426 woodcuts, including 4 on the title page. One barely visble repair to the final leaf of index. Overall, a very clean copy. [BOUND SECOND AFTER]: (MEDICINE) Fries, Lorenz. SPIEGEL DER ARTZNEY... [Edited by Otto Brunfels]. Strassburg: B. Beck. 1529. Folio. ff.CXLI. Lacking the final blank leaf. Title with elaborate woodcut border with 4 sections including portraits "Galienus" and "Aescolapius." Full page woodcut of a dissected (pre-Vesalian) body on f.X. Both works bound together in original roll-tooled pigskin, each cover with a central stamped figure. Pigskin has some old soling. Small repair at the front hinge. Both clasps present, but one catch defective. Overall, a beautiful copy in its original binding.    $30,000.00 (trade discount allowed)

These 2 works were each published separately, but are often found bound together. Housed in a brown cloth folding box, with some discoloration. 
I. This German edition of the HORTUS SANITATIS is an abridgement, it consists of sections two to five: animals, birds, fish and stones, without section one on herbs. It is a very important, profusely illustrated encyclopedia of natural history. Durling 2467. VD16 H5125.
II. Lorenz Fries (d. circa 1532-1550) was a physician from Colmar, astrologer, author and cartographer. His "Mirror of Medicine" first appeared in 1514, with 6 more editions printed by 1546. The 1529 edition is newly corrected. See Durling 1664. VD16 F2873.
