WILSON, Woodrow. THE NEW FREEDOM. A CALL FOR THE EMANCIPATION OF THE
GENEROUS ENERGIES OF A PEOPLE. New York & Garden City: Doubleday, Page &
Company, 1913. First Edition. SIGNED by the author as President on the
half-title page and dated by him "29 July, 1913," less than 5 months
into his first term. An important book by Wilson, though as he explains
in the preface, not actually written by him but rather a compilation of
excerpts from his campaign speeches. Wilson successfully used "The New
Freedom" as a campaign slogan in the 1912 presidential election, with a
focus on progressive reforms of tariffs, business, and banking. A letter
on White House stationery from the Secretary to the President forwarding
the book is included. Books autographed by Wilson are rather uncommon;
those signed as President are scarce. Bookplate of Louis Barton Torrey
on the front pastedown. Housed in a red cloth clamshell box. Paperclip
indentation to first few pages; spine and covers with some staining and
soiling, corners slightly bumped. Very Good, lacking the scarce
dustwrapper but in a Fine clamshell box. (#020230)        $6,000
