172, #2. First printing of this satiric essay, a satire exposing 
imperialism as revealed in the Boxer Uprising and its aftermath, the 
Boer War, and the Philippine–American War. In January 1901 Twain became 
a vice president of the Anti-Imperialist League of New York. Also 
includes an article by W. D. Howells titled "Mark Twain: An Inquiry," as 
well as an essay by former president Benjamin Harrison, "Plight of the 
Democratic Party" by Perry Belmont, "The South and the Negro" by Marion 
L. Dawson, and other pieces. Rear cover with some soiling and chipping. 
Near Fine and uncommon as an individual issue rather than in a bound
