Frances Anne Butler: Journal. Philadelphia: Carey, Lea & Blanchard, 1835. First American edition. Two volumes, 8vo (19.5 cm), in original publisher's plum colored cloth, printed spine labels; 252, [12] pp.; 218, [26] pp.; with the half-titles and publisher's adverts. Bindings with sunning, rubbing and wear, chipping to the spines, both boards of vol. I detached; contents with scattered foxing, heaviest on the pages of publisher's adverts, previous owners' signatures to the front endpapers of vol. I. Front paste-downs of both volumes with the contemporaneous label of "Huntington & MacIntire, Booksellers, Columbus, Ohio."

The British actress Fanny Kemble's account of her travels in America while accompanying her father on a theatrical tour. At the time this journal ends, she had just married an American, Pierce Butler. She subsequently lived with him on a Georgia plantation he had inherited and was so appalled by the treatment of the slaves there, as well as his abusive treatment of her, that she left him and returned to England with their daughters, eventually publishing a damning account of her time there, Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1838–1839 (1863).
