{Richard Steele, ed.:] Poetical Miscellanies, consisting of Original Poems and Translations. By the best Hands. Publish’d by Mr. Steele. London: Printed for Jacob Tonson at Shakespear’s Head over-against Catherine-Street in the Strand, MDDCXIV[sic] [1714]. First edition. Small 8vo (17.25 cm) in early/period cat’s-paw calf; [16], 318, [2, blank] pp., engraved frontispiece. Leaf A7 a cancel as usual, p. 317 misnumbered 217; the final blank leaf is present. ESTC T75180; Case 279a; Rothschild 1957; Griffith 24.

First edition of this famous collection, significant for its contributors, which include, besides Steele himself, Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift, John Gay, Thomas Tickell, Thomas Parnell, Wharton, Young, and others. Three of Pope’s poems and four by Gay are first appearances; some of Swift’s are preceded only by broadside printings.

Binding with some bumping to the corners, wear to the spine ends, loss of the spine label; contents with a touch of light browning at the top edges, a few small stains and spots of soiling, otherwise very clean and crisp, firmly bound. Front paste-down with the bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst, a noted collector of eighteenth-century literature in contemporary bindings.
