Desiderius Erasmus [White Kennett, trans.]: Witt against Wisdom. Or A Panegyrick upon Folly: Penn'd in Latin by Desiderius Erasmus, Render'd into English. Oxford: Printed by L. Lichfield, Printer to the University, for Anthony Stephens, Bookseller near the Theater, 1683. First edition thus. Tall 12mo (16.5 cm) bound in later, but not recent, half calf and marbled boards, gilt-lettered morocco spine label; [46] + 157 + [1] pp. (bookseller's adverts on final page). ESTC R15011; Wing E3215.

First edition of Kennett's translation of Erasmus's virtuoso satire and best-known work, Moriae Encomium (In Praise of Folly). Later editions appeared under the title, Moriae encomium, or, A panegyrick upon folly. The prefatory material includes the "Epistle from Erasmus to Sir Thomas Moor [More]," a note to the reader, and several laudatory verses praising Kennett on his "excellent Translation." Title-page soiled, chipped and laid down, browning to the last few leaves, lighter scattered browning to the text, one leaf with short closed tear to the top edge, early ink inscriptions to the last leaf; binding with some soiling and edgewear, front hinge cracked but secure. An uncommon book.
