Braun, August Emil; [Braun, Auguste Emil]
Vorschule der Kunstmythologie [AN HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT COPY]

Gotha: J. Perthes [Justus Perthes], 1854. First Edition, First
Printing. Hardcover.
A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of the First Edition, First printing, in
the EXCEEDINGLY RARE ORIGINAL DUST JACKET with the book's author, title,
and a small decoration appearing on the dust jacket's front panel in black,
the mirror image of which appear on the volume's front board in gilt. (None
of the foregoing appear either on the volume's or dust jacket's spine.) The
dust jacket has kept volume's original brown cloth in a remarkably clean
condition. Because of the dust jacket's presence, the front board's deep
brown color has been well-preserved and the front board's gilt remains
remarkably bright. The volume shows some bumping and rubbing to the leading
corners of each board as well as some rubbing to the spine ends, a bit of
curving to the boards, and a short split to the upper portion of the front
joint. [The volume was issued in a perfectbound format and most of the
leaves had come loose before the volume came into our possession. The
leaves have been professionally reattached and the volume is in a quite
solid condition.] Within, the leaves (which include 65 pages of text and
100 Plates) show heavy foxing to the earliest and last few pages (including
to the earliest and last plates) and almost all of the plates show much
less -- and scattered -- foxing. (The attached images show a number of the
plates selected totally at random.) The dust jacket shows foxing,
particularly to the front panel, some rubbing, and some repaired tears and
chips, as well as a small hole to the rear panel. To the jacket's verso an
old piece sheet of paper has been (unnecessarily) affixed. The Plates show
Greek god figures and mythological scenes such as Zeus, Jupiter, Neptune,
Pluton (a/k/a Hades), Demeter, Kora, Hestia, Kronos, Rhea, Apollon
(Apollo), Artemis, Athene, Aphrodite, Ares, Hermes, Hephaestos, Romulus and
Remus. A German Archaeologist, Emil Braun, in 1833, accepted an invitation
from his fellow German Archaeologist, Eduard Gerhard, to go to Berlin.
While there, Braun decided to change his career and to thereafter devote
his efforts to Art History. Later that year, Braun and Gerhard went to
Rome, where Braun became a librarian. Thereafter, Braun became the
secretary to the German Archaeological Institute where he established a
galvano-plastic workshop which issued many reproductions of antique art
objects as well as casts of modern works. The book itself is scarce to the
market and, as mentioned above, this copy wears its EXCEEDINGLY RARE DUST
JACKET. There are only about 20 books known from all countries with
surviving publisher's printed dust jackets produced up to the
mid-nineteenth century, aside from a few annuals, and this is one of them.
Such jackets from the later 1860s or early 1870s turn up now and then, but
such jackets from the early to mid 1850s almost never appear. The volume
itself is SCARCE to the market and, as it wears its EXCEEDINGLY RARE 1854
DUST JACKET, this copy is of GENUINE HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE. Very good /
very good. Item #2953

Acker, Paul; Ardouin-Dumazet; des Gachons, Jacques; Geniaux, Charles; Le
Goffic, Charles; Merki, Charles; Paillon, Maurice; Sedeyn, Emile; and
Spont, Henri
Le Tour De France

Paris: Publication du Tour de France, 1911. First Edition, First
Printing. Wrappers.
A remarkable Fine copy of the first edition, first printing in the
Publisher's original wrappers still wearing the RARE ORIGINAL TRANSLUCENT
DUST JACKET. The volume is in unusually attractive condition with only mild
wear and the exceedingly ephemeral dust jacket shows some general wear and
tear but its very existence is quite surprising if not stunning. The jacket
wraps around the entire book (excluding only the page block's top and
bottom edges) and was issued with seals that affixed its opposite ends to
each other. Unsurprisingly, the seals have broken -- either by age and
handling or to enable someone to look at the page rectos and versos. [Being
ephemeral, most examples of the dust jacket used in the series of like
books issued by the Publisher over the course of years -- of which this
book is an excellent example -- would have perished over time or have been
discarded.] The book appears to have been unread as most of the page pairs
remain unopened at the page block's top edge. (An example of this is shown
in one of the images of the book that we have. We would be happy to provide
the multiple images we have taken to potential buyers of the book as well
as to researchers.) The book is replete with images, including some maps,
and city/townscapes. [Please note that the volume is not about the bicycle
race but is instead about the beautiful country of France. This is a heavy
book and requires shipment by Priority Mail. Buyer's shipping cost will
exceed the amount quoted by this site.] A. Fine / near fine. Item #2974

Rembrandt
Rembrandts Handzeichnungen. I. Band Rijksprentenkabinet zu Amsterdam. II.
Band Königl. Kupferstichkabinett zu Berlin. (2 volumes) [Rembrandt's
Drawings Volume I, 1912 and Volume II, 1914]

Berlin: Hermann Freises, 1912 and 1914. First Edition, First Printing.
Hardcover.
A Fine set of this First German Edition of Rembrandt's Drawings: issued in
two volumes, Volume I presents 56 tipped-in illustrations and Volume II
presents 176 tipped-in illustrations. The text is in German. Each Volume is
in Near Fine condition (with Volume I's spine somewhat toned and showing
oxidation to the gilt spine lettering and with each volume showing some
scattered foxing to the cloth). Each Volume wears its RARE ORIGINAL DUST
JACKET in Fine condition and each Volume is housed in its RARE ORIGINAL
SLIPCASE. The slipcase to Volume I is open (as made) to one side for
insertion and removal of its Volume, bears its original applied label, and
shows a crack where the front panel meets the spine panel which crack runs
from the lower corner for approximately 65% of its height and a crack to
the rear which runs a much shorter distance. The slipcase to Volume II
surrounds the entire volume and has a hinged tuck-in panel which can be
opened and closed. This is an astonishing and RARE set with its RARE
ORIGINAL DUST JACKETS AND RARE ORIGINAL SLIPCASES, an ASTONISHING RARE
SURVIVAL and THEMSELVES A REMARKABLE EXAMPLE OF BOOK PUBLICATION HISTORY.
RARE INDEED. Fine / fine. Item #2981

Lagerkvist, Par
Barabbas [Signed; JACK PALANCE'S COPY]

Stockholm: Albert Bonniers Forlag, 1950. First Edition, First
Printing. Wrappers.
A Very Good + copy of the TRUE FIRST EDITION, first printing in the
Publisher's original white wrappers with the front panel lined in blue and
which, together with the spine and real panel is printed in black and blue,
wearing a near very good copy of the scarce orange and white dust jacket
which shows general wear - including some loss as well as some toning and
tide marking to the spine as well as tape repairs to the verso at the spine
and flap folds, SIGNED BY PAR LAGERKVIST on the title page (which also
shows a small section which has been marked over in black). Not only is
this copy signed but it also has a wonderful Provenance, having been the
copy of Jack Palance. [The half-title bears a small sticker showing his
image and attesting that this copy was sold in the 2006 auction of
Palance's personal property held at his Pennsylvania farm on October 12-14,
2006.] Par Lagerkvist was a Swedish writer who authored poetry, plays,
novels, stories, and essays, often using his writing to examine the
fundamental question of good and evil. In his novel "Barabbas", he used
Barabbas to examine that theme. [When time for the Jewish Passover feast
arrived each year, it was customary for the Romans to release a prisoner
scheduled to be executed to the Jews. Barabbas, having been convicted of
having committed murder during the insurrection” against the occupying
Roman forces, was scheduled to be executed. Pilate, who had questioned
Jesus and found him innocent, then asked the Jews gathered in Jerusalem for
the Passover if they would prefer that he release Barabbas or Jesus. The
crowd responded that he should release the murderer Barabbas rather than
Jesus who was then crucified. The crowd calls for Barabbas to be the one
released. Lagerkvist's version of the story was promptly considered to be a
literary masterpiece. In Lagerkvist's version of the story, Barabbas then
watches Jesus as he bears the cross to Golgotha, witnesses his crucifixion,
and then spends the rest of his life trying to understand why he, rather
than Jesus, was chosen to live. Par Lagerkvist won the 1951 Nobel Prize in
Literature. In his presentation speech, Anders Österling, Permanent
Secretary of the Swedish Academy, stated the following: "That the moving
interpretations of the inner conflicts of Barabbas have found such
repercussions even in foreign languages clearly shows the profoundly
inspired character of this work, which is all the more remarkable as the
style of it is original and in a sense untranslatable. Indeed, in this
language at once harsh and sensitive, Lagerkvist’s compatriots often hear
the echo of Småland folklore reechoing under the starry vault of Biblical
legend. This reminds us once more that regional individuality can sometimes
be transformed into something universal and accessible to all." The novel
provided the basis for the 1961 movie starring Anthony Quinn as Barabbas.
The film also features Silvana Mangano, Katy Jurado, Arthur Kennedy, Harry
Andrews, Ernest Borgnine, Vittorio Gassman, and Jack Palance, with Palance
playing Torvald, the top gladiator in Rome. A Very Good copy of this
highly-notable work by Nobelist Par Lagerkvist, SIGNED BY PAR LAGERKVIST,
AND HAVING AN EXCELLENT PROVENANCE, BEING THE COPY OF JACK PALANCE WHO WAS
CAST IN THE 1951 MOVIE BASED ON THE BOOK. RARE. Very good + / near very
good. Item #3068

Hemingway, Ernest
Poetry: A Magazine of Verse, Vol. XXI [THE FIRST APPEARANCE IN PRINT of SIX
POEMS BY ERNEST HEMINGWAY]

Chicago: Harriet Monroe, 1923. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A
Very Good copy of Volume XXI of "Poetry A Magazine of Verse" covering the
quarterly issues beginning in October, 1922 and continuing through and
including March, 1923, bound (without the original wrappers) in brown
boards for the City Library of Lincoln, Nebraska and showing the usual
ex-library characteristics. The library name appears in perforation several
times and is scattered through the leaves, and other library markings also
are scattered throughout the volume, and the leaf hosting pp 175/176 has a
marginal tear with loss -- the section torn away is loosely laid in to
facilitate repair. One of the leading monthly poetry journals in the
English-speaking world, "Poetry" (founded as "Poetry: A Magazine of Verse")
began publication in Chicago in 1912. The most noteworthy feature of this
volume is the FIRST APPEARANCE IN PRINT OF SIX POEMS BY ERNEST HEMINGWAY.
The Poems, listed in the volume's Content section under the general title
"Wanderings", are themselves: "Mitraigliatrice" (wrongly spelled in the
Contents section of the January issue and in the Poem heading itself as
"Mitrailliatrice"), "Oily Weather", "Roosevelt", "Riparto d'Assalto",
"Champs d'honneur", and "Chapter Heading", and are found at pages 193-195.
Hemingway, known by most as a novelist and the author of such works as "The
Sun Also Rises", "A Farewell to Arms", "The Old Man and the Sea", "For Whom
the Bell Tolls", and others, won the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature "for
his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old
Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary
style, but he also wrote a great deal of poetry, especially in his youth.
His first published work in book form (of which only 300 copies were
printed) was titled "Three Stories & Ten Poems" and was published in the
summer (likely in July) of 1923. The ten poems contained in that book are:
"Mitrailliatrice" (a misspelling of the proper title "Mitraigliatrice"),
"Oklahoma", "Oily Weather", "Roosevelt", "Captives", "Champs d'Honneur",
"Riparto d'Assalto", "Montparnasse", "Along With Youth", and "Chapter
Headings". As noted above, of these ten (10) poems six (6) appear (across
pages 193, 194, and 195) of this Volume XXI of the Magazine and are listed
under Hemingway's name in this volume's "CONTENTS" section under
Hemingway's name and under the subheading "WANDERINGS": "Mitrailliatrice",
"Oily Weather", "Roosevelt", "Riparto d'Assalto", "Champs d'Honneur", and
"Chapter Headings". Of the book "Three Stories & Ten Poems" (1923), only
three hundred (300) copies were printed, and those by Robert McAlmon's
"Contact Publishing" in Paris. The ten poems therein are:
"Mitrailliatrice", "Oklahoma", "Oily Weather", "Roosevelt", "Captives",
"Champs d'Honneur", "Riparto d'Assalto", "Montparnasse", "Along With
Youth", and "Chapter Headings". Thus we have here, in this volume, THE
FIRST APPEARANCE IN PRINT OF SIX (6) of Ernest Hemingway's Poems, and those
having been issued months ahead of the first issuance of any of Hemingway's
poetry elsewhere. RARE INDEED. Very good + / very good +. Item #3085

Dana, Katharine Floyd
Our Phil, and Other Stories [Complete in the Rare Dust Jacket and with the
Publisher's Marketing Card]

Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1889. First Edition, First
Printing. Hardcover.
A Fine, Superior, tight (and apparently unread) copy of the first edition,
first printing, of this collection of African-American stories by a female
author, with illustrations by E. W. Kemble [who also illustrated Twain's
"Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's
Cabin", and other books] in an about Fine example of the Rare Dust Jacket
(short tear to the front panel's top edge, scattered foxing, small area of
surface wear to the rear panel's lower left). During her life and in her
social circle, a woman working as a writer was seen as inappropriate.
Consequently, Dana published under the pen name Olive A. Wadsworth which
stood for "Only A. Woman". As this work was published posthumously, it was
published under her given name, making it the first of her works so
published. [The story "Our Phil" and the "Other Stories" in this book first
appeared in the Atlantic Monthly under her pen name.] The book is in Fine,
Superior, condition with hardly any wear, and comes in an excellent example
of the RARE DUST JACKET with surprisingly minor wear — only the second copy
in the dust jacket that we ever have seen. The viewer will notice, of
course, that the dust jacket is plain as it is from the period when jackets
were used not to sell the book but only to keep the book clean until put
out for sale. Virtually all of the dust jackets for the book would have
been discarded. The viewer also will see that the jacket's spine panel was
long ago torn at its top edge to reveal the book's title — a common
warehouse practice — which would have made locating the book on the
warehouse shelves easier than would otherwise have been the case. At the
time this book was issued, dust jackets were not used to help sell the book
and thus lacked the decoration one sees on later-published books. Such
jackets also often did not show one or all of the title, the author, or the
publisher — all three being absent from this dust jacket, as the dust
jacket's sole purpose was to keep the book clean until it was put out for
sale. Thus, this book is RARE in the dust jacket and is a part of book
publishing history, making it an important copy as well. A QUITE SCARCE TO
RARE copy as well as a COLLECTION-DISTINGUISHING COPY MENTIONED ON PAGE
121, AND OF WHICH AN IMAGE APPEARS ON PAGE 119, of Mark Godburn's excellent
work titled "Nineteenth-Century Dust-Jackets" published by Oak Knoll Press
in the US and by Private Libraries Association in the UK. A RARE AND
REMARKABLE COPY. Fine / fine. Item #3021

Price: $550.00
