Braun, August Emil; [Braun, Auguste Emil]
Vorschule der Kunstmythologie [AN HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT COPY]

Gotha: J. Perthes [Justus Perthes], 1854. First Edition, First
Printing. Hardcover.
A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of the First Edition, First printing, in
the EXCEEDINGLY RARE ORIGINAL DUST JACKET with the book's author, title,
and a small decoration appearing on the dust jacket's front panel in black,
the mirror image of which appear on the volume's front board in gilt. (None
of the foregoing appear either on the volume's or dust jacket's spine.) The
dust jacket has kept volume's original brown cloth in a remarkably clean
condition. Because of the dust jacket's presence, the front board's deep
brown color has been well-preserved and the front board's gilt remains
remarkably bright. The volume shows some bumping and rubbing to the leading
corners of each board as well as some rubbing to the spine ends, a bit of
curving to the boards, and a short split to the upper portion of the front
joint. [The volume was issued in a perfectbound format and most of the
leaves had come loose before the volume came into our possession. The
leaves have been professionally reattached and the volume is in a quite
solid condition.] Within, the leaves (which include 65 pages of text and
100 Plates) show heavy foxing to the earliest and last few pages (including
to the earliest and last plates) and almost all of the plates show much
less -- and scattered -- foxing. (The attached images show a number of the
plates selected totally at random.) The dust jacket shows foxing,
particularly to the front panel, some rubbing, and some repaired tears and
chips, as well as a small hole to the rear panel. To the jacket's verso an
old piece sheet of paper has been (unnecessarily) affixed. The Plates show
Greek god figures and mythological scenes such as Zeus, Jupiter, Neptune,
Pluton (a/k/a Hades), Demeter, Kora, Hestia, Kronos, Rhea, Apollon
(Apollo), Artemis, Athene, Aphrodite, Ares, Hermes, Hephaestos, Romulus and
Remus. A German Archaeologist, Emil Braun, in 1833, accepted an invitation
from his fellow German Archaeologist, Eduard Gerhard, to go to Berlin.
While there, Braun decided to change his career and to thereafter devote
his efforts to Art History. Later that year, Braun and Gerhard went to
Rome, where Braun became a librarian. Thereafter, Braun became the
secretary to the German Archaeological Institute where he established a
galvano-plastic workshop which issued many reproductions of antique art
objects as well as casts of modern works. The book itself is scarce to the
market and, as mentioned above, this copy wears its EXCEEDINGLY RARE DUST
JACKET. There are only about 20 books known from all countries with
surviving publisher's printed dust jackets produced up to the
mid-nineteenth century, aside from a few annuals, and this is one of them.
Such jackets from the later 1860s or early 1870s turn up now and then, but
such jackets from the early to mid 1850s almost never appear. The volume
itself is SCARCE to the market and, as it wears its EXCEEDINGLY RARE 1854
DUST JACKET, this copy is of GENUINE HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE. Very good /
very good. Item #2953

Price: $3,250.00 TEMPORARILY AVAILABLE AT $475.00
Acker, Paul; Ardouin-Dumazet; des Gachons, Jacques; Geniaux, Charles; Le
Goffic, Charles; Merki, Charles; Paillon, Maurice; Sedeyn, Emile; and
Spont, Henri
Le Tour De France

Paris: Publication du Tour de France, 1911. First Edition, First
Printing. Wrappers.
A remarkable Fine copy of the first edition, first printing in the
Publisher's original wrappers still wearing the RARE ORIGINAL TRANSLUCENT
DUST JACKET. The volume is in unusually attractive condition with only mild
wear and the exceedingly ephemeral dust jacket shows some general wear and
tear but its very existence is quite surprising if not stunning. The jacket
wraps around the entire book (excluding only the page block's top and
bottom edges) and was issued with seals that affixed its opposite ends to
each other. Unsurprisingly, the seals have broken -- either by age and
handling or to enable someone to look at the page rectos and versos. [Being
ephemeral, most examples of the dust jacket used in the series of like
books issued by the Publisher over the course of years -- of which this
book is an excellent example -- would have perished over time or have been
discarded.] The book appears to have been unread as most of the page pairs
remain unopened at the page block's top edge. (An example of this is shown
in one of the images of the book that we have. We would be happy to provide
the multiple images we have taken to potential buyers of the book as well
as to researchers.) The book is replete with images, including some maps,
and city/townscapes. [Please note that the volume is not about the bicycle
race but is instead about the beautiful country of France. This is a heavy
book and requires shipment by Priority Mail. Buyer's shipping cost will
exceed the amount quoted by this site.] A. Fine / near fine. Item #2974

Price: $2,350.00 *TEMPORARILY AVAILABLE AT $475.00*
Rembrandt
Rembrandts Handzeichnungen. I. Band Rijksprentenkabinet zu Amsterdam. II.
Band Königl. Kupferstichkabinett zu Berlin. (2 volumes) [Rembrandt's
Drawings Volume I, 1912 and Volume II, 1914]

Berlin: Hermann Freises, 1912 and 1914. First Edition, First Printing.
Hardcover.
A Fine set of this First German Edition of Rembrandt's Drawings: issued in
two volumes, Volume I presents 56 tipped-in illustrations and Volume II
presents 176 tipped-in illustrations. The text is in German. Each Volume is
in Near Fine condition (with Volume I's spine somewhat toned and showing
oxidation to the gilt spine lettering and with each volume showing some
scattered foxing to the cloth). Each Volume wears its RARE ORIGINAL DUST
JACKET in Fine condition and each Volume is housed in its RARE ORIGINAL
SLIPCASE. The slipcase to Volume I is open (as made) to one side for
insertion and removal of its Volume, bears its original applied label, and
shows a crack where the front panel meets the spine panel which crack runs
from the lower corner for approximately 65% of its height and a crack to
the rear which runs a much shorter distance. The slipcase to Volume II
surrounds the entire volume and has a hinged tuck-in panel which can be
opened and closed. This is an astonishing and RARE set with its RARE
ORIGINAL DUST JACKETS AND RARE ORIGINAL SLIPCASES, an ASTONISHING RARE
SURVIVAL and THEMSELVES A REMARKABLE EXAMPLE OF BOOK PUBLICATION HISTORY.
RARE INDEED. Fine / fine. Item #2981

Price: $1,250.00 *TEMPORARILY AVAILABLE AT $275.00*
[Perthes, Johann Georg Justus]
Gothaischer Hofkalender [Almanach de Gotha]

Gotha: Justus Perthes, 1842. First Edition, First Printing. A REMARKABLE
and Fine copy of the first edItion, first prinTing, in a Fine slipcase
(with a light pencil note to the front panel). The spine label to the
slipcase remains in remarkably fine condition. The book itself is in Fine
condition and shows a bare touch of wear. The volume is light green with
the boards and spine decorated in green, white, and silver, and all three
edges of the closed page block are purple, making this an absolutely
beautiful book. Copies in a condition as nice as is this copy are quite
scarce to the market. A Fine copy in a Fine slipcase and QUITE SCARCE TO
RARE in a condition as beautiful as is this copy. QUITE SCARCE TO RARE.

[Peck, George Wilbur]
Peck's Bad Boy: RARE POSTER FOR PLAY

[None Stated]: [Non Stated], [1884]. First Edition. No Binding. A Very Good
RARE ORIGINAL WOODBLOCK POSTER for a stage play featuring Peck's Bad Boy.
Civil War Veteran, Politician, and Author George Wilbur Peck (1840-1916),
who owned a Wisconsin newspaper known as the "Sun", authored a humorous
weekly newspaper column which often featured a character of his own
invention named Henry "Hennery" Peck who first appeared in 1882. The
character was tremendously popular and became known as "Peck's Bad Boy".
Peck went on to write a series of books' featuring Hennery Peck who was
known for pulling pranks on members of the town, but most especially on his
father, for the pure joy of causing trouble and chaos. Peck began writing
these stories, which were turned into books as well, in the early 1880s.
'Peck's Bad Boy' became a household name in the United States and was so
popular that he entered the American lexicon with the dictionary definition
of "Peck's bad boy" being "one whose bad behavior is a source of
embarrassment or annoyance". Charles E. Pidgin adapted the first story into
a stage play, and various companies began performing the Play around the
country. In 1891, then teenager and vaudeville actor George M. Cohan toured
for thirty-five weeks in the role of Hennery. After many of Cohan's
performances, he had to fight his way out of the theater as neighborhood
boys would be waiting in alleyways to test their fighting abilities against
those of Hennery Peck, who ended the Play by stating 'I can still lick any
kid in town!'. Notably, these Bad Boy stories became so fashionable for a
time that Mark Twain was criticized for jumping on the bandwagon with Huck
Finn and the New York World published a review which said: "Were Mark
Twain's reputation as a humorist less well founded and established, we
might say that this cheap and pernicious stuff is conclusive evidence that
its author has no claim to be ranked with Artemus Ward, Sydney Smith, Dean
Swift, John Hay, or any other recognized humorist above the grade of the
author of that outrageous fiction, 'Peck's Bad Boy.'" [A silent film was
made in 1921 starring Jackie Coogan. After Peck's death, his "Peck's Bad
Boy" writings became the basis for several films and a television show.]
This is a Very Good copy of this RARE poster showing some mild scattered
water staining as well as some edge wear and chipping, folds, and some
compete and some partial tears within the sections, but with the colors
remaining rather rich and vibrant. The Poster is comprised of six (6)
sections and was designed to be posted outside where it would be subject to
the sunlight, rain, snow, and other weather conditions. The sections have
interior margins whereupon the adjoining section(s) would be laid such that
the final complete poster -- which would have glue applied to each
section's verso for mounting to a wall or other surface -- once mounted,
would show only the exterior margin. Once thusly prepared and mounted, the
Poster could not be removed without destroying it. (The Poster remains in
its original six sections. We have left some interior margin exposed in two
of the photographs posted with this listing.) Consequently, few copies
would have survived to the present day. This copy never was used and is a
REMARKABLE SURVIVOR which was found in a barn and thus was neither
vulnerable to the fading caused by sunlight nor to the other damage that it
would have suffered had it been exposed to the weather. Once properly
arranged as if it were to be posted, the Poster measures approximately 6
feet 10 inches X 6 feet 10 inches. A RARE UNSOPHISTICATED POSTER AND A
REMARKABLE SURVIVOR. RARE INDEED. Very good. Item #2758

Kane, Joseph Nathan
Famous First Facts [Signed Association copy; JACOB BLANCK'S COPY with his
corrections inserted]

New York: H. W. Wilson Company, 1950. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. A Very
Good copy of the first edition, first printing, of the 1950 revision of
this work by Joseph Nathan Kane containing numerous Famous First Facts,
including those discovered by additional research undertaken since, as well
as those based on matters which have taken place since, publication of
Kane's first (1933) compilation of famous first facts. Thus this edition
contains the material found in "Famous First Facts" (1933), the material
contained in "More First Facts" (1935), and more. This copy has a WONDERFUL
PROVENANCE, having been THE COPY OF RENOWNED BIBLIOGRAPHER JACOB BLANCK and
has been cleverly and appropriately inscribed by Kane to Blanck on the
front free endpaper as follows: "To Jacob Blanck / "FIRST IN BIBLIOGRAPHY"
// Sincerely // Joseph Nathan Kane". Blank's ownership stamp (with a small
mark on it) is affixed to the front pastedown. The volume is in Very Good
condition with some marking and rubbing, as well as some spots, to the
cloth. The rear hinge (internal) has been cracked open. An errata slip
regarding the first Air Mail ever flown has been typed on a separate slip
of paper and is affixed at the left margin of page 15, presumably by or for
Jacob Blank, stating that the "fact" provided in the text lacks
authenticity). The slip shows some typewriter key damage. Another slip
regarding the first use of the Dollar sign appears to have been clipped
from another publication and is affixed to the left margin of page 167 --
the slip provides further information on the matter and contains a short
note in pencil -- presumably by Blanck. The entry for "lithograph" on page
264 has beside it an "o" added in pencil to refer to a note in the bottom
margin reading "o ? See DAB" with "DAB" underscored. Yet another original
slip of typed paper regarding wood pulp paper is affixed to the inner
margin of page 329 and is dated "(March 14, 1961)". On page 484 a pencil
note has been added with respect to the entry for "Woman newspaper editor"
stating: "See Brigham / Journals & Journeymen - P. 74". Page 535 (part of
the volume's Index by Years) shows seven pencil marks in the right margin
adjacent to entries appearing there. The volume also contains an Index by
Days, a Names Index, and a Geographical Index. These marks and inserts are
living demonstrations of the care and thoroughness characteristic of the
great Jacob Blank's bibliographical work. A Very Good copy, being JACOB
BLANCK'S COPY of this notable and useful volume with several additions
thereto apparently added by Blanck, a wonderful illustration of the great
Bibliographer at work commentating upon and correcting the work of the
famous provider of widely-used reference works Joseph Nathan Kane, CLEVERLY
INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY JOSEPH NATHAN KANE TO THE RENOWNED BIBLIOGRAPHER
JACOB BLANCK. A wonderful Association Copy of this notable reference work.
Very good. Item #2782

hesitated but eventually agreed to meet him. The two quickly fell in love

letters presented in these volumes cover that important period in their
lives. A beautiful set with each Volume wearing its RARE GLASSINE DUST

Ruskin, John; Norton, Charles Eliot [Compiler and Preface]
Letters of John Ruskin to Charles Eliot Norton

Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1904. Hardcover. A Fine
set of the first edition, third impression of this collection of Letters
from John Ruskin (1819 – 1900) to Charles Eliot Norton (1827 – 1908)
published in two volumes in the Publisher's original green cloth with the
front board and spine lettered and decorated and lined in gilt, the top
edge of each closed page block in gilt, and with each volume wearing its
original dust jacket. The title page of each volume dates them to 1905 but
the copyright page of each volume states that it was published in
"November, 1904". Each volume is in lovely condition with its deep green
binding being rich in color, with just a touch of rubbing the leading
corners and with the lower leading corner of Volume II being bumped. Each
volume's dust jacket is in Very Good condition with modest soiling and some
chipping to the jacket edges. In his Preface to this collection of letters
Norton states that he first contemplated not publishing these letters
during his lifetime but, on further consideration decided to publish them,
noting that the editors of then in process complete edition of Ruskin's
writings asked that Norton allow them to publish them. However, not wanting
the trust anyone else to select and edit Ruskin's letters to him, and
noting that no other series of Ruskin's letters "... extended unbroken over
so long a term of years, or was likely to possess so much autobiographical
interest, - comparatively little, indeed, as a record of events, but much
as a record of moods and mental conditions. As a picture of character the
letters were as a whole unique", Norton determined to do the work himself.
Englishman John Ruskin was not only the leading Art Critic of his (the
Victorian) era, but also a patron of art, draughtsman (i.e. one who draws),
watercolourist, philosopher, a noted social thinker and generous
philanthropist. Ruskin's writings included work on geology, architecture,
myth, ornithology, literature, education, botany, and political economy.
Charles Eliot Norton was a highly-notable author, social critic, and
professor of art, as well as a social reformer and liberal activist
considered by many to be one of the most cultivated men in America. [Please
Note: As this copy is the third impression of the First Edition, the
content will mirror that of the first impression i.e. of letters written
well before any set of these letters was published. However, unlike any
other set we have seen, this set has the SCARCE DUST JACKETS.]. Fine / very
good +. Item #3028
