Major [Thomas] Skinner: Adventures During a Journey Overland to India, by way of Egypt, Syria, and the Holy Land. London: Richard Bentley, 1837. Second edition. Two volumes, 8vo (19 cm), in full navy blue calf decorated in blind and gilt, gilt-lettered spine labels, marbled page edges and endpapers; 324, 291 pp.; with two frontispieces. Bound without the half-titles.

Maj. Skinner (1800-1843), an English officer serving in India, gives a lively account of his return to his regiment in 1833 via the overland route through Egypt, the Holy Land, Syria and Mesopotamia, then down the Euphrates before embarking on the Persian Gulf. With accounts of visits to Alexandria, Caesarea, Nazareth, Jaffa, Jerusalem, Damascus, Babylon, Baghdad, Basra, Muscat, etc., as well as observations on desert travel, dealing with thieves, the Imam of Muscat's navy, etc. etc.

Bindings with a few scuffs and some wear to the edges and extremities, volume labels lost; spotting and offsetting to the frontispieces and titles, mild general toning to the contents with a few stray small spots, early gift inscription (1843) to the front free-endpaper, else clean and sound, firmly and attractively bound.
