Contemporary, mottled calf. Rear board detached, but present, front board nearly. Red and black title page. Tick marks to margins in blue (pencil?), bracketing. and the occasional manuscript note.Tiny worm tunnels for the first 135 pp. Lightly age-tanned. Five books in one binding, but Book IV, entitled TRAVELS IN MUSCOVY, has separate pagination. [12], 191, [1]; 178, [2] p. (final advertisiement leaf at rear, with small tear to center)..
" First English edition of an account by the French missionary, and professor of philosophy and mathematics Philippe Avril, relating his travels in search of an overland route to China and the Far East. "Avril was instructed by the King of France to attempt to pioneer an overland route to China. After traveling six years through Kurdistan, Armenia, Astrakhan and Persia, Avril arrived at Moscow but was turned away and refused permission to travel through Tartary by the Russian Government and returned to Poland". After writing this narrative of his journey, he set out again for the East in 1698 by the sea route; his ship never arrived and it was presumed had died enroute". He was 44 years of age.
