Small 4to. (48) pp. Printed at the Chiswick Press. Text printed on laid
paper; text clean, un-marked, top edges un-opened. Quarter vellum,
boards, printed spine title; binding square and tight, some light foxing
to top edge, gentle bumps to corners, but in all a very clean, bright
copy.
John William Mackail (1859-1945) was a Scottish man of letters and
socialist, now best remembered as a Virgil Scholar. He was also a poet,
literary historian and biographer. John Mackail was Oxford Professor of
Poetry and President of the British Academy. He was a friend of William
Morris and published works on Virgil, the Latin poets, the Icelandic
sagas, and Shakespeare.
With the bookplate of Charles Williston McAlpin. Charles Williston
McAlpin graduated from Princeton University in 1888 and was secretary of
Princeton University from 1901 to 1914 and served as Chairman of the
Council of the Friends of Princeton University Libraries. He was a
member of the board of managers of the Presbyterian Hospital of New
York, and a friend of President Woodrow Wilson.
