Augustine, Saint. OF THE CITIES OF GOD: With the Learned Comments of Jo. Lodovicus Vives. Englished First by J. H. [John Healey] and Now in This Second Edition Compared with the Latine Original, and in Very Many Places Corrected and Amended. London: G. Eld and M. Flesher. 1620. Folio. (xviii),861[i.e. 860],(4)pp. Large woodcut device on title. Some large woodcut initials. Original calf, spine with six raised bands, red morocco spine label. Some rubbing to hinges, very bottom of spine with 2 cracks, but all leather is present,  and the hinges are quite sound; a nicely preserved original binding and a very clean copy. Signature "O" is mis-folded. A1, a blank, is lacking as is usually found. Text with some light lower margin soiling in a few places. One leaf (2Z3) with a neat repair at lower blank margin. Final 2 leaves (the index) with slight loss at blank lower outer corner. Overall, a solid very good copy in its original binding.                    $4,000.00 (trade discount allowed)

The second edition in English, revised, of Augustine's (d. 430) CITY OF GOD, considered his most important work, along with his CONFESSIONS. With the commentary of the great Spanish scholar Juan Luis Vives (d. 1540). STC 917. Note: there are only 2 editions of the English translation in all of the 17th century, 1610 and 1620.
