Hardouin de Perefixe de Beaumont: The History of Henry IV. Surnamed the Great, King of France and Navarre. Written Originally in French, by the Bishop of Rodez, once Tutor to his now most Christian Majesty; and made English by J. D. London: Printed by James Cottrel, for Samuel Speed, at the signe of the Rainbow near the Inner Temple-gate in Fleet-street, 1663. First English edition. Small 8vo (16.5 cm) in modern half calf and marbled boards with gilt-lettered spine label, page edges dyed red; [16] + 400 pp.; woodcut decorations and initials. Wing P1465bA; ESTC R203134.

Spine lightly sunned, light even browning to the contents, a few small scattered spots, a handful of leaves with discreet marginal markings by an early owner, otherwise very clean and crisp, firmly and attractively bound. An uncommon early biography of Henry IV of France (1553-1610). The author was bishop of Rodez and, later, of Paris, and was a close spiritual adviser to Louis XIV. His life of Henry IV, first published in French in 1661, was reprinted numerous times and was admired by such admirable critics as Voltaire and Saint-Beuve.
