[Pierre Mathurin de l'Ecluse des Loges; Charlotte Lennox, trans.:] Memoirs of Maximilian de Bethune, Duke of Sully, Prime Minister to Henry the Great. Containing the History of the Life and Reign of that Monarch, and of his own Administration under Him. Translated from the French. To which is added, the Tryal of Ravaillac for the Murder of Henry the Great. In six volumes. London: Printed for A. Millar; R. and J. Dodsley; and W. Shropshire, 1763. Six volumes, small 8vo (17.5 cm), in early/period calf; with two engraved portraits in vol. I. ESTC T119363.

An early English translation of this apparently rather loose adaptation of the great French statesman's Memoires. According to the ESTC, "the dedication is signed by the translator: Charlotte Lennox, but it is said to have in fact been written by Samuel Johnson." Spines well rubbed and worn, with the spine labels mostly lost, some joints cracked but the boards are holding, text block of vol. V starting to crack at the mid-point; contents mildly toned, with a few occasional light spots and touches of soiling, else quite clean and sound. Front paste-downs with the armorial bookplates of Sir Willoughby Jones, Baronet, Cranmer Hall, Norfolk.
