(BASKERVILLE PRESS) TERENTIUS, Publius (TERENCE). COMOEDIAE. Birmingham:
John Baskerville, 1772. First Edition. The quarto (9-1/4" x 11-1/2")
Baskerville Edition (there was also a duodecimo edition) bound in modern
green buckram with gilt lettering on the spine, all edges gilt; (ii),
364 pages. Gaskell 46 with pages 203 misnumbered as 303 and 299 as 283.
Terence, a Roman playwright, is believed to have been a Carthaginian
slave educated and freed by his Roman master. Six of his plays have
survived. Baskerville, a pioneer in advances in printing technology, is
credited with the invention of hot-pressing: pressing the wet sheets
between copper plates, thereby smoothing the paper and setting the ink.
Baskerville invented an ink that was both quick-drying, allowing him to
print the reverse sides of his paper faster, and uncommonly rich, black
and lustrous in appearance. Contents clean with wide margins; binding
with little wear. Near Fine. (#020517) $150
