Jonas Hanway: Essays and Meditations on Life and Practical Religion, with a Collection of Proverbs, containing Instructions and Admonitions for promoting true subjection to laws divine and human. London: Printed for John Rivington in St. Paul's Church-Yard. R. and J. Dodsley in Pall-Mall, and C. Henderson under the Royal-Exchange, MDCCLXII [1762]. Bound in early/period speckled calf, 8vo (21 cm), gilt-lettered spine label; iii, vi-x,[2],39,24-73,[2],20-280 pp. (the pagination is erratic, as issued, but the text is continuous); engraved frontispiece and plate, engraved title-page vignette of George III. ESTC T126852.

Binding with modest wear to the edges, a bit of scuffing to the boards; contents with a few scattered small spots and touches of soiling, mild toning to and from the frontispiece, else quite clean and fresh, firmly bound. An attractive example of this rather uncommon religious work by Jonas Hanway (1712-1786), merchant, traveler and philanthropist. Having traded and traveled for many years in Russia and the Middle East (he published An Historical Account of British Trade over the Caspian Sea in 1753), he returned to England and set his mind to good works. In addition to his relentless efforts on behalf of chimney-sweeps (A Sentimental History of Chimney Sweepers, in London & Westminster, 1785), Hanway also conducted campaigns against tea-drinking, tipping, and hackney coachmen. He was also said to be the first Londoner to carry an umbrella.
