Ezra From Aardvark Today Offers Folio Society’s Stunning Edition of Tolkien’s Epic Masterpiece

Tolkien, J.R.R. THE HOBBIT AND THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY (THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING; THE TWO TOWERS; THE RETURN OF THE KING)

All four volumes quarter-bound, dark -brown Wassa morocco goatskin, with sides of hand-woven, gold-dyed pure Indian silk. Gilt lettering to spines. Top edges are gilt and each book features a sewn-in silk ribbon marker. (upper silk to rear board of Hobbit appears of a different lot than lower, and perhaps a bit darker). The Hobbit is in its own goatskin slipcase, brightly stamped in gilt. The three volumes comprising The Lord of the Rings trilogy, housed in a single, scalloped slipcase, also of goatskin. Top edges gilt, each volume with a sewn-in silk ribbon marker. The Hobbit endpapers, in red and black, feature Thror's Map (front) and Wilderland (rear). Map endpapers to the three books of the trilogy, front and back, in green. Edition limited to 1750 numbered copies (of which these are Number 161). Bound by Smith Settle of Otley, Yorkshire, with calligraphy by John Andrew Arca. Hobbit illustrated by Eric Fraser. The illustrations for the trilogy are by Ingahild Grathmer, drawn by Eric Fraser. Tolkien's mammoth, multi-volume fantasy of adventure, high-risk, and dangerous sojourn amongst evil forces, is an epic for the ages, and The Folio Society's decision to create an appropriately elegant work of high bookmaking craft, resulted in an this stunning rendition of this timeless tale.

NOTE: This set, does NOT include the Silmarillion, issued in like binding as well, and sometimes offered alongside it. The Silmarillion is a collection of stories, posthumously-published by Tolkien's son Christopher, (never authorized for publication by J.R.R. Tolkien) which originally constituted the author's sequel to The Hobbit, but which was rejected by publisher Unwin as being "too Celtic", and after which eventually followed The Lord of The Rings trilogy.

NOTE: There exists often-encountered confusion about reprinted editions of this work. We find a possible explanation in another bookseller's description to this effect: Although the reprintings for these books are listed as 2001 (The three volumes of the Trilogy) and 2002 (The Hobbit), respectively. The bookseller writes: "all limited editions of this title come from the seventh Folio Society printing." Assuming this is true, these listed printings are not meant to indicate a multiple printing for these limited editions, but for the overall work itself. Any further unpacking of this confusion will require booking a session with Gandalf. $1800
