John Muir: The Writings of John Muir. "Manuscript Edition." Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1916-1924. First edition thus, number 690 of an edition limited to 750 copies. Nine (of ten) volumes, 8vo (23 cm), in original publisher's green buckram, brown leather labels with gilt-stamped lettering on spine, untrimmed edges; with tissue-guarded photogravures, halftone plates, folding maps.

With a leaf of manuscript in Muir's hand tipped in to vol. 1: "...flying banners a mile long. Such a wind can scarce be wholly invisible to the blindest imagination. And when we look down over this swaying forest we see the bottom of the wind fairly pictured like a canvas [^] a poem of sculpted motion. The hills..." (a rough draft of a passage that appears in The Mountains of California, chapter 10: "A Wind-storm in the Forests").

With 62 photogravures, each with printed tissue guards, numerous halftone plates and maps, and two folding maps. Bindings with modest wear, some sunning to the spines and edges, a few small spots and stains; the contents are unopened (meaning that many of the leaves are still joined together at the top or fore-edge, as issued), signifying that these volumes have never been read.

Lacking vol. 6 (Our National Parks), but otherwise complete, consisting of: vol. 1. The Story of My Boyhood and Youth and A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf; vol. 2. My First Summer in the Sierra; vol. 3. Travels in Alaska; vols. 4 & 5. The Mountains of California; vol. 7. The Cruise of the Corwin. Journal of the Arctic Expedition of 1881 in Search of De Long and the Jeannette; vol. 8. Steep Trails. California, Utah, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, The Grand Cañon; vols. 9 & 10. The Life and Letters of John Muir.
